November 21, 2009 - Corvallis, OR - An animal study shows that R-alpha lipoic acid can significantly reduce the formation of triglycerides.
Feeding the animals R-alpha lipoic acid prevented the fat-storing genes from activating which promoted the clearance of triglycerides from cholesterol in the liver. It was noted during the study that the liver stored sugar normally (preventing insulin resistance).
This study used Zucker Diabetic Fatty rats, which are bred to become obese and diabetic so scientist can study these problems.
