Cerebrospinal Fluid Flows

  In our body's brain, Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) circulates around the brain and spinal cord, which cushions, cleanses, and brings nutrients to the cells in the brain and spine. CSF is produced in small, hollow spaces within the brain called ventricles. Excess CSF normally drains away into the bloodstream as fresh CSF is produced.  In our body's brain, the Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) flows continually from the interior cavities in the brain (ventricles) to the thin subarachnoid space, just beneath the meninges, that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. About one pint of this clear fluid is produced per day and is absorbed by the blood stream.
CSF performs the following functions:
  • Balances the amount of blood in the head.
  • Bathes and protects the brain and spinal cord.
  • Carries nutrients between the brain and spinal cord while removing waste.

Normal flow and absorption through the subarachnoid space is dependent on proper CSF pressure in the head (called intracranial pressure). **
