Semaphorins

  On and in our body's cells, Semaphorins a are a large family of secreted and transmembrane proteins that may act as intercellular signaling proteins which mediate axonal guidance, act as repulsive cues for neuronal growth cone, and bind to receptors on their filopodia, encoded by members of the SEMA gene family.
  At least 20 different Semaphorin molecules have been described, divided into eight classes based on domain organization and species of origin.
  • Classes 1 and 2 are invertebrate,
  • Classes 3-7 are vertebrate, and
  • Class V are viral.
Also Semaphorins may be classed as either:
  • Secreted (classes 2, 3, and V)
  • Transmembrane (classes 1, 4, 5, and 6)
  • Membrane-anchored (class 7)
